Drop a small piece of sodium, about the size of a couple of grains of rice, into ethanol (absolute alcohol).

What do you observe?

It produces sodium ethoxide (2CH₃CH₂O^–Na⁺) & H₂.

2Na + 2CH₃CH₂OH → 2CH₃CH₂O^–Na⁺ + H₂

How will you test the gas evolved?

✅ Answer

When a burning spitter is brought near to the gas, the gas burns with pop sound. A layer of moisture is formed inside the glass tube.
